Statement of Impurity (Najasat)

The impure substances that exit from the human body, etc., are of two types:

1)  The impurity which is visible to the eye, which is light (Najasat-e-Khafifa) is called... like blood, alcohol, urine of non-edible animals etc.

2)  The impurity which is visible but due to the ruling of Shariah is considered heavy impurity (Najasat-e-Ghaliza) like human urine, human stool, flowing blood etc. Its ruling is strict.

There are two types of Real Impurity:

(1) Najasat-e-Ghaliza (Heavy Impurity) (2) Najasat-e-Khafifa (Light Impurity)

Najasat-e-Ghaliza - Heavy impurity is that which is proved by a strong and certain proof. Like urine and stool of human, flowing blood of human and animals, stool of dog, excreta of chicken, duck, etc., and wine etc.

Ruling of Heavy Impurity

1) If it is liquid, then its ruling is like this:

If the heavy impurity is on the body or clothes and its quantity is more than one Dirham (approx 3 grams / area of inner palm), then prayer will not be valid. If it is equal to or less than one Dirham, then prayer is valid but it is Makruh (disliked). If it is removed, it is better.

Ruling of Light Impurity:

If the light impurity is on the body or clothes, and it covers up to one-fourth of the body part or one-fourth of the cloth, then prayer will not be valid. If it is less than one-fourth, then prayer is valid but it is still Makruh.

And if it is mixed with water, then if its effect is visible, the water will become impure.

2) If it is dry, then its ruling is like this:

If the dry heavy impurity sticks to the body or clothes and its weight is equal to 3 grams (one Dirham) then prayer will not be valid. If it is less than that, then it is excused and prayer will be valid.

And if it sticks to the floor or ground, then its ruling will be like this:

Najasat-e-Khafifa - Light impurity is that whose impurity is proved by a light proof. Like urine of halal animals (whose meat is eaten) and the excreta of birds whose meat is not eaten.

Ruling of Light Impurity:

Urine of halal animals and excreta of haram birds, its ruling is that it is light impurity.

Ruling of Excused Impurity:

A small amount of impurity that is difficult to avoid, its impurity is excused, like a little splash of urine, or mud on the road, or if there is a little blood from a wound etc. If it is on the body or clothes, then prayer will be valid. But if it is possible to avoid it, then it is better to wash it. In that case, if it is not washed, then prayer will be Makruh.

Chart in the end says:

Human body waste - Two types:

A) The one which is visible and thick, like stool, blood etc. - called Najasat-e-Ghaliza.

B) The one which is thin and light, like urine of halal animals, etc. - called Najasat-e-Khafifa.

 Najasat-e-Ghaliza:

If liquid: If more than one Dirham - prayer invalid. If equal or less - valid but Makruh.

If dry: If its weight is 3 grams or more - prayer invalid. If less - excused.

Najasat-e-Khafifa:

If it covers one-fourth or more of the cloth/body - prayer invalid. If less than one-fourth - valid but Makruh.
